Starting from 4th April 2024, the Italy digital nomad visa can be applied. It is valid for a period not exceeding one year and can be renewed annually should you meet the requirements. Within eight days of arrival, one should apply for a residence permit, also known as permesso di soggiorno.

The digital nomad visa is designed to benefit non-EU remote workers who are highly skilled and carry out qualified work activities with the use of technological tools that allow them to work remotely, as freelancers, self-employed workers, or company employees of foreign companies.
Key Requirements for Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa
Remote workers and digital nomads who are interested in applying for Italy’s digital nomad visa have to fulfill the list of minimum requirements below to qualify:
- An income three times the minimum level required for exemption from healthcare participation expenses (EURO €28,500)
- Health insurance covering their entire period of stay
- Proof of accommodation in Italy
- At least six months of prior work experience as a digital nomad or remote worker

Italy Digital Nomad Visa Tax Rules Explained
Once your application for Italy’s digital nomad visa is successful, you will be immediately considered a tax resident and subject to income tax and social security contributions. You will be taxed for your income in Italy and your home country.
Depending on your home country, you can avoid double taxation. Italy has tax treaties with a number of countries, and citizens from these countries can offset taxes paid in Italy against their home country taxes.
To comply with tax regulations, you must file an annual tax return (Modello Redditi) in Italy, typically due in June or July. The tax return should include details of your income, deductions, and tax credits.
